A Letter to You, Dear Parent…

A little note from one homeschooling mum to another.

Dear Parent,

Perhaps you are here because something about conventional schooling doesn't feel right for your child. Perhaps you have been wondering if there is another way to learn, another way to grow, another way to experience childhood.

Or perhaps you are simply curious about homeschooling, but have a hundred questions and a thousand doubts.

First, take a deep breath. You don't have to figure everything out today.

When I began homeschooling my son, I didn't have all the answers either. What I had was curiosity, courage, a willingness to learn and an open mind. Over the years, our home became our classroom, the world became our learning space, and everyday experiences became lessons that no textbook could fully capture.

We explored, experimented, questioned, made mistakes, discovered interests and learnt at our own pace. It wasn't always easy, and it certainly wasn't a picture-perfect journey. But it was ours.

Today, my son has moved on to college, and our homeschooling journey has come full circle. Yet, the questions, conversations and learning continue.

Somewhere along this journey, I also found myself becoming a mentor to other homeschooling families. Through my experience as an educator of over 20 years, a homeschooling mother and a member of vibrant parent communities, I have come to realise something important: every family needs a different kind of roadmap.

Homeschooling is not about escaping school. It is about understanding your child, exploring possibilities and making informed decisions about their education. And it is not necessarily the right choice for everyone — but every parent deserves the opportunity to understand it before making that decision.

So, if you are standing at the beginning of this unfamiliar path, wondering where to start, which curriculum to follow, what philosophy to explore, or simply whether you are doing the right thing — know that you don't have to navigate every question alone.

Sometimes, all it takes is a conversation with someone who has been there.

Before You Begin: A Word of Caution
Homeschooling is a rewarding path — but it’s not for everyone.
I do not promote homeschooling as a universal solution. It’s a deeply personal choice that depends on your family's values, lifestyle, and capacity.

✔️ Don’t choose homeschooling just because you dislike school. Schools are not bad. System is not bad.
✔️ Understand your child’s and your own strengths, limitations, and learning styles.
✔️ Be ready for commitment, consistency, and creativity.

Before formal education begins, children learn naturally from their surroundings — parents, grandparents, and daily life. Homeschooling builds on this instinctive, curiosity-led learning.

02 Homeschooling is a Family Journey
It’s not about replacing school worksheets — it’s about learning together.
✔️ Everyday tasks like peeling garlic, folding clothes, storytelling, or cooking are powerful learning tools.
✔️ Pick a method that aligns with your family's rhythm — Montessori, Waldorf, project-based, or your own unique blend.

03 There’s No One-Size-Fits-All Approach
Your homeschooling style could be:
– Academically rigorous
– Creative and hands-on
– Flexible and child-led
– Sport based or Music driven

What matters is that it suits your child and your family.

04 Curriculum & Resources
There’s an abundance of material — but you must curate wisely.
✔️ Use a mix of textbooks, online tools, DIY activities, and real-world experiences.
✔️ You can follow or blend CBSE, SSC, ICSE, IGCSE, NIOS, IB, Waldorf, Montessori, thematic learning, or build your own curriculum.

05 Exams & Boards
Homeschoolers in India have flexible board options:
✔️ NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling)
✔️ Cambridge IGCSE
✔️ State Boards (e.g., SSC) – with specific documentation
Each has its own process — research based on your academic goals.

06 Support Systems & Communities
You’re not alone.
